First, find a wildfire protection funding program or grant
Taking the initiative to make your home or property wildfire safe is the single best decision a homeowner or homeowners association can make. Finding the funding to cover these initiatives, however, is not always easy. Luckily, there are many fire prevention grant programs available for landowners and property managers who would like to make their land wildfire safe. Cal Fire recently closed its wildfire prevention grants, but additional grants are available for property owners. For example, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) accepts applications for their Environmental Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP) program throughout the year.
Cal Fire is also working to open another round of Fire Prevention Grants sometime this summer.
Second, determine if you are the ideal candidate for a wildfire mitigation application
Ideal candidates for wildfire grant funding programs include Homeowner associations, such as Eskaton Village HOA or housing developers, like Lennar Homes are the ideal applicant for any of these grants.
Third, write a competitive application to a wildfire protection grant
In order to successfully earn funding, try to maximize acres for your proposed project. For example, a 100-acre project is a great size for the NRCS to fund. To get to 100-acres, landlords often join together to create an application with an optimal size. Therefore, homeowner associations are ideal candidates.
